Climate protection project Madre de Dios, Peru

The bioloco collection supports forest conservation and sustainable harvesting initiatives in the Madre de Dios region of Peru.

The Madre de Dios region is part of the Amazon rainforest and is also a nature reserve that is home to numerous endangered animal and plant species.

The project develops initiatives that increase both the value of the healthy forest and the income from the sustainable harvest of Brazil nuts.

Local families benefit from a secure source of income, making illegal logging unattractive.

The project's holistic approach contributes to the sustainable protection of approximately 300,000 hectares of rainforest and achieves savings of approximately €2 million.

Tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. The project pursues the following sustainability goals:

  • The project ensures job security and long-term income for smallholder farmers.
  • Gender equality – A significant proportion of the project's target group and Brazil nut smallholder farmers are women. This project strengthens land rights for smallholder farmers, thus contributing to reducing inequality.
  • The project contributes to decent work by creating jobs in forestry and generates economic growth through the sale of Brazil nuts.
  • The sustainable cultivation of Brazil nuts contributes to reducing rainforest deforestation.
  • For every ton of CO2 offset, the project protects an average of 2,000 square meters of Amazon rainforest.
  • By preserving the rainforest, numerous species of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians as well as tree and other plant species are protected.
